English

Despite the pivotal role of first marriages in fertility dynamics, divorce and remarriage represent critical additional determinants influencing fertility, primarily through the disruption and re-establishment of marital unions. In this study, the intention to have two or more children was analyzed among 200 couples awaiting a second marriage, in which men and women were under 50 and 40 years of age, respectively. Data were collected during the first wave of the cross-sectional Survey of Marriage and Divorce by the National Organization for Civil Registration (2017) and analyzed using a mixed logistic regression model. The results indicated that only about 11 percent of men and women intended to remain childless, whereas approximately 60 percent intended to have two or More children in their second marriage. Furthermore, men’s intention to have two or more children was higher than that of women. Individuals residing in provinces with above replacement-level fertility and those living in rented housing reported higher fertility intentions compared to those in low-fertility provinces and owner-occupied housing, respectively. Additionally, as couples’ age and the number of children from their first marriage increased, the intention to have two or more children decreased. According to the findings, remarriage appears to partially mitigate the negative impact of divorce on overall fertility.
