The increasing number and dispersion of mortality studies in Iran highlight the need to identify research gaps, classify existing evidence, and determine future research priorities. This study aimed to summarize the evidence on mortality research in Iran and identify critical gaps to inform future studies. A scoping review was conducted encompassing original and review studies published from 2006 through the first half of 2025. Persian and English databases, including SID, Magiran, Noormags, the Comprehensive Portal of Humanities, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, were searched. Following screening and the removal of duplicate and irrelevant records, 393 studies were included in the final analysis. Findings revealed that most studies focused on mortality patterns and determinants, while relatively few addressed data quality, predictive modeling, or the socioeconomic consequences of mortality. More than 90% lacked an explicit theoretical framework, and the majority relied on data from the Ministry of Health. Research predominantly focused on the general population, with limited attention paid to vulnerable groups—particularly older adults, mothers, and the workforce. Micro-level and inequality-focused geographical analyses were also scarce. Despite substantial growth in mortality research in Iran, important gaps remain in theoretical frameworks, advanced methodologies, inequality analysis, forecasting, and policy-oriented research.
