From Chronological Age to Prospective Age: Redefining the Boundary of Old Age in Iran

English

The definition of age used thus far is generally based on the assumption that physical and psychological characteristics associated with age remain constant, whereas these characteristics dynamically change over time. Consequently, dependency ratios calculated on the basis of this conventional definition fail to capture the dynamic dimensions of aging. In this study, various measures of age and old-age dependency ratios are analyzed using life table estimates through 2023 and population projections through 2100. Based on the pattern of mortality change in Iran, the remaining life expectancy of an Iranian individual at age 65 is estimated to be approximately 15 years. Under Iran’s mortality conditions in 1951, an individual with a remaining life expectancy of 15 years was equivalent to a 58-year-old person, whereas under the mortality conditions projected for 2071, the equivalent age would be 74 years. Accordingly, using the prospective old-age threshold corresponding to age 65 in 2021, the old-age dependency ratio declines from approximately 24 older persons per 100 supporters in the 1950s to around 12 older persons per 100 supporters between the 1960s and 2021. It then increases to approximately 30 older persons per 100 supporters in the 2040s, after which it remains nearly stable. By contrast, estimates indicate that the old-age dependency ratio based on chronological age reaches approximately 60 older persons per 100 supporters over the same period, representing an overestimation of about 30 percentage points relative to the indicator based on the prospective old-age threshold. Therefore, relying solely on chronological age in assessing population aging fails to capture a crucial dimension of the underlying demographic reality.
