The study aims to assess the trends of marriage indicators in selected countries of Asia and the Pacific Region with a focus on Iran over the past four decades (1970-2010). According to specified criteria, ten countries of the region, including Iran, have been selected. The data was derived from the Population Division of the United Nations in 2009. The results show that three distinct patterns prevail in the region with regard to trends of marriage indicators: The characteristic of the first pattern is a sharp and significant rise in age at marriage as well as permanent singlehood over the past 4 decades (e.g., Japan and Australia). The characteristic of the second pattern is some rise and decline of marriage age over time and an initial small rise in singlehood over the past 4 decades (e.g., Iran, Thailand, Malaysia, Azerbaijan, and New Zealand) and finally, the characteristics of the third pattern are minimum changes in both marital timing and singlehood over the past four decades (e.g., China, India, and Tajikistan). The cultural and ethnic variations related to marriage in these countries seem to explain the variation in trends among these countries. Hence, the role of developmental, cultural, and social factors on marriage age in various countries needs to be assessed more than before.
