In spite of a substantial and pervasive shift in family attitudes and beliefs during recent years in Iran, there are a few studies that analyze trends, differentials, causes and consequences of this attitudinal change in Iran. Using data from a survey among a sample of 612 respondents in the city of Yazd, this paper attempts to study attitudes towards the importance of Mahrieh's role in family stability and analyze social differences related to these attitudes. Findings indicate that although there are statistically significant differences between women and men with regard to the attitudes towards the function of Mahrieh in family stability, and women have more positive attitudes in this regard, the overall range of this difference is not large. Findings also show positive and significant relationships between socioeconomic status, mass media exposure, religiousness, ideal value of Mahrieh, marital status, and birthplace with attitudes towards the Mahrieh's function in the stability of marriage. However, the attitudes are not significantly varied according to age groups and educational levels. Further research is required to evaluate the effect of the real value of Mahrieh on the possibility of marital dissolution.
