This study aims to rank the most important leading causes of death in Fars province in 2006, based on Years of life lost (YLLs). Required data were obtained from the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education. To correct data for the underreporting of deaths over five years of age, the Brass Growth Balance Method was applied, and for deaths under five years of age, we corrected data based on trend analysis. We estimated Years of Life Lost for three categories of the leading causes of death. The YLL caused by unintentional accidents, diseases of the circulatory system and cancers were 87887, 109223 and 31303 years, respectively. While unintentional accidents were the major cause of YLL for males, in the case of females, diseases of the circulatory system were the main cause for YLL. Although the highest YLL caused by diseases of the circulatory system in both sexes were in the elderly, unintentional accidents were the main causes for YLL in younger age groups.
