Following economic, social and cultural changes in the world, many family functions have gone through vast changes. Modernization has brought about lower fertility, postponement of marriage for better opportunities in life. These global changes have affected Iran and its rural communities as well. The goal of this article is an inquiry into generational changes in familial functions, values, attitudes, marriage, and fertility. Using life history technique and in-depth interviews, 2 rural families in 3 generations (97 people in total) residing in Hesar Khorvan village were studied. The life history technique was employed to investigate how individual attitudes, values behaviors towards familial functions, were affected by social and historical circumstances during the past 50 years. Findings indicate that changes in governments' policies and practices in a rural context have had a crucial effect on forming these attitudes and behaviors. Nowadays, we witness the primacy of personal and sexual satisfaction in marriage over the importance of fertility function and other familial functions and values among the third generation.
